Ice cubes studded with whole star anise elevate this easy cocktail that’s perfect for Thanksgiving or other festival fall occasions. Don’t forget put the ice cube trays in the freezer several hours before serving the drink. Better yet, make a big batch of star anise ice cubes today and keep them stashed in the freezer for impromptu happy hour get-togethers.

  • 3 star anise pods
  • 2 oz. (60 ml) bourbon
  • 1 1/2 oz. (45 ml) maple syrup
  • 1 oz. (30 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 oz. chilled prosecco, Champagne or sparkling water

  • At least 8 hours before serving the drink, place the star anise pods in one well of an ice tray that makes extra-large (about 1 3/4-inch/4.5-cm) cubes. Cover with warm water and freeze until solid.
  • In a chilled double old-fashioned glass, stir together the bourbon, maple syrup, lemon juice and bitters. Add the star anise ice cube and stir until the cocktail is well chilled. Top with the prosecco and stir gently to combine. Makes 1 drink.
